Mapping & 3D Modeling

We flew a mapping mission for a client in northern Wisconsin, who had flooding issues due to rising lake waters. This mission was flown at 400 feet with a Mavic 2 Pro, and collected GCPS on the property with a Reach RS2 survey grade GPS. The 200+ images were stitched with PIX4D. This data was then put into ARC Pro GIS to create some maps to inform the client about a multitude of information.

Above is the 3d model generated by the mapping flight. The property is between the main road next to the field and goes to where the gravel road and the street lined with houses intersect. The gray low-lying area is the area of concern, most of the gray vegetation is dead cedar trees due to the flooding.

The map on the left depicts the height of the area, with purple being the lowest and red being the tallest object in view. From this we can see that the area of concern is by far the lowest area, and there is now way for the water to flow out from that area. On the right is a false color image, which was generated to help get an easier idea of where the dead trees are. The Purple is healthy vegetation and the gray is dead vegetation, again surrounding the low lying areas. We also mapped a trail that this client has running through his property, but we are not including that map as it is private land.

Another model we created was the Sturgeon Bay lighthouse on the canal, this was done from only 22 images, an amount that usually woundn’t be enough to create a 3d model from.
